Christ-centered formation for men

A life that looks strong
can still feel disconnected.

For men carrying responsibility at work, at home, and within—who want to live with greater presence, steadier peace, deeper alignment, and strength that creates safety.

A quiet invitation to return. Beginning with the forthcoming memoir by Johnathan Butler.

The work beneath the surface

You were made for more
than holding it all together.

You can carry responsibility, meet every expectation, and still feel far from yourself—and from the people you love. What remains hidden shapes how you show up.

Roots & Rivers invites men into Christ-centered formation: receiving identity from God, facing hidden pain with truth and compassion, and learning to live with presence, integrity, and connection.

Rooted enough to be honest. Present enough to connect. Strong enough to create safety.

A reflective spiritual memoir

Roots and Rivers

Identity, Embodiment, and
Connection Beyond Hidden Pain

For those who have learned to survive well.

Through honest story and grounded reflection, Johnathan Butler traces the movement from hidden pain and performance as identity toward listening to the body, restorative faith, safer connection, and a life that gives life.

With particular resonance for men, this memoir welcomes anyone who has quietly lost touch with themselves beneath a competent life. It makes room for grief, boundaries, faith, and fatherhood without rushing toward easy answers.

“This is not a book about arriving.
It is a book about returning.”

The person behind the pages

Meet Johnathan Butler.

A writer, father, and Army officer exploring the hidden life beneath outward strength.

Johnathan’s writing draws on his own experience of achievement, fatherhood, collapse, and healing. His work centers on faith, trauma-awareness, and relational presence—the slow work of becoming more honest, more boundaried, and more whole.

He has served more than twenty-three years as an officer in the United States Army and holds an MBA from William & Mary. A father of two daughters, he lives in Virginia. Roots & Rivers is his first book.

Roots & Rivers is rooted in Christ-centered formation. It complements, rather than replaces, licensed mental-health or medical care.

The Roots–Tree–Rivers framework

From what is hidden
to how we live.

Identity received from God becomes daily practice. What takes root within can become presence, responsibility, and service in the lives around us.

01 Roots

Receive your identity.

Tell the truth about your story and the beliefs you carry. Make room for an identity in God beyond what you achieve or provide.

In everyday life

Notice when your sense of worth rises or falls with how useful you feel.

02 Tree

Let truth become practice.

Learn to notice your body, honor limits, and bring your actions into greater alignment with what you believe.

In everyday life

Listen inwardly before responding outwardly. Take a pause when you need one.

03 Rivers

Bring presence to others.

Let inward formation flow into your relationships, work, and service—with responsibility for your choices and their impact.

In everyday life

Return to a difficult conversation ready to understand, own your part, and repair.

A place to begin.

Strength that creates safety.
Healing that becomes inheritance.
